Lip fillers, also known as dermal fillers or injectable fillers, are cosmetic enhancements that can add volume and shape to the lips. Additionally, some may be particularly helpful for reducing lip lines and restoring a youthful contour to the lips. While many lip fillers exist, the ones we use are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in the body that helps keep skin plump, youthful, and hydrated. Lip fillers come in different forms and strengths, depending on the desired outcome and the specific cosmetic concerns a patient has.
Lip fillers are injected directly into the lips using a fine needle, and each session tends to last only a matter of minutes. The hyaluronic acid in the filler works to attract and retain water, which adds volume and plumpness to the lips. In addition, some fillers can stimulate collagen production, which helps keep the lips plump and full even after the filler has dissolved. Eventually, the body breaks down HA fillers through a natural process, allowing for patients to have touch-up treatments or try a different aesthetic approach.
